Nested between Santa Fe Baldy and Round Mountain in the Pecos Wilderness is Jack’s Creek. Jack’s Creek confluences with Pecos River that continues south to feed a multitude of fishing ponds. Driving up to Jack’s Creek is narrow and windy, where the last 8ish miles of NM-63 is unmarked but once you get to the top, the campground there is breath taking.
The Family tried this spot July 2024 with Dad’s uncle. They brought the OG pop up, while we continue learning to use the TT. The campground is all dry camping at the time and it is first come first serve, so arriving during the week will ensure you find a spot. By Saturday, people were double parking themselves to stay off the loop pavement. The sites are far apart.

Fishing is plentiful for rainbow trout. There are multiple holes on the way up managed by either FS or NM State emnrd. There’s also a hiking trail that you can shortcut up to. It officially starts on the other side, where horse trailers can be kept and it climbs up and over the mountain. We passed several groups of horseback riders. About 14mi out is the Pecos Baldy Lake, where you could do some backpacking, when our kiddos get older, I’d like to try it out.
