The old TV decided to go head to head with a three old and his golf ball. Let’s say it didn’t go anywhere I would like. Due to the fear of the same thing happening again The Family bought a cheap Chinese TV only to find out it is pretty good.
Meet the new TV
The new TV is a TCL 55S517 (2018 model). It was price slashed to I think to make room for the 2019 model. Compared to the 4 series and the 6 series, Dad like the feature set of the 5 series: supports Dolby Vision HDR10 that the 4 doesn’t, yet doesn’t have Full Array Local Dimming, which enhances contrast but not enough to risk a higher price point in plain sight in the living room.

Here’s a review of this tv. Some nice specifications they mention is it has a .35″ bezel, two big vents that dissipates heat well, 6000:1 contrast, and performs at par with the samsung 7 series brightness. (~300 cd/m²), the VA panel is immune to burn-in artifacts, and the lag is perfect for gamers.
TIVO remote code
To program the TiVo remote to this tv, hold the power and TiVo button for 5 seconds and then use code 0091. This sets the IR correctly to power/volup&down/input.
Purchased July 23, 2019 and it has a 1 year limited warranty.
